We have the ability and responsibility to end FGM in this day in time. Annually, 4 million girls and young women are at risk of FGM in 31 countries (more than 500K at risk in the U.S.). The reasons for preforming FGM varies depending where it is preformed; which include 4 types:

 

1. Clitoridectomy - partial or total removal of the clitoris

2. Excision - partial or total removal of the clitoris and inner labia

3. Infibulation - sowing closed the vagina leave a hole small enough for bodily fluid to pass. Clitoris may or may not be removed.

4. Other - pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterising (burning) the genital area

 

The effects of FGM are long lasting. Cutting often leaves tissue damage, scarring, infections, extensive vaginal damage, cysts, nerve damage, and prolonged bleeding; which has led to the deaths of it’s victims. For those who are able to give birth, prolonged childbirths have led to oxygen deprivation of the child and stillbirths.

 

For the past five years, Dema Dimbaya has assisted several groups and organizations in multiple countries to protect girls and young women from FGM, mostly during the Easter break from school. When schools are on extended break, Easter break can be as long as six weeks in some areas, girls are vulnerable and risk greatly increases.

 

This year Dema Dimbaya assisted two organizations in western Kenya (Kuria, Maasai, Samburu, Meru, Tharaka, Sabaot and Pokot regions) to protect nearly 1000 girls. Eight sisters were asked to contribute and their selflessness helped shelter nearly 1000 girls, provide security, food, educational supplies, healthcare supplies, clothing, and sanitary pads. The shelter protection ended on April 25th, 2022. In addition to the aforementioned, a motorbike will be donated in a few weeks that will assist in evacuating girls from areas where they are at risk. Our girls have the right to live in a world where FGM does not exist.
